Daddy Warbucks – Crook the Books
Daddy Warbucks is a 22 year old producer based in Cape Town, South Africa.
His influences are far-reaching and tend to lean towards artists that go further than expected regardless of genre. Having a steady foundation in old school hip hop his ear for a groove is astute and present in both his own tracks and the sets he crafts.
Crook the Books is DW’s debut EP released on naasMUSIC. The two-track EP offers a brief insight into DW’s mission to offer tracks that don’t bore, marking a slight departure from his fast-paced DJ sets. Both the title track and ‘That Exit’ exhibit a menacing stasis while at the same time indicate a progressive willingness to push boundaries.
Crook The Books, the title track of the EP provides a tour, albeit in slow motion, of a wonderfully intricate sonic landscape. The addition of what seems like infinite tiny details that gets more fascinating with every listen: in particular the baseline shows off a malleable pressure that lurks throughout.
That Exit is a prime example of where house music and the LA beat scene collide. Evidence of DW’s omnivorous musical consumption he manages to merge two seemingly irreconcilable genres into a peaceful haze. This track serves as an anchor point of DW’s experimental leanings which will stand as a reference point for his production in the future.
