The joys of being a blogger is that I get to interview my favourite local and international DJ’s / Producers but what makes this “JOB” fun is when I get to interview new artist I have never heard of who then become my favourite artists. This time I was honoured to interview The Watermark High before his gig at Park Acoustics on the 1st of June. Was such a fun interview, we spoke about who The Watermark High is, his EP and a little joke was shared. Have a read below…

1) For all the readers out there who may not be familiar with you, tell us a bit about The Watermark High & how this all started.

I’m Paul van der Walt, a music geek and electronic music producer from Johannesburg, South Africa. I produce and perform music as The Watermark High. The Watermark High you know today, started in early 2012. I make electronic music for the body and the brain

2) Influences, we all have someone or something that influences us to do something or achieve something. Who or what would you say is your biggest influence? What roll does your influence play?

Apart from the obvious musical and personal influences, I just have an inherent need to make music and to express myself through it. It’s a huge part of who I am and I have been making music for a long time, so I can’t imagine not doing it. It’s role? I guess, it’s a big part of my identity and it gives me purpose.

3) Bright Black, your latest EP, could you please describe it?

It’s has 6 tracks and features my own amalgamated take on all my influences, ranging from instrumental hip-hop to experimental electronica to downtempo, to name but a few. You can currently download it for free from

4) Out of the 6 track EP, which track would you say is your favourite?

At the moment I think ”Muddle” and ”Saudade” are my favourites. I think they best represent what I wanted to achieve with this release…

5) For this EP who or what was your influences?

I guess the ”harder to pigeon-hole” type of electronic music which I love and listen to mostly. Stuff like Lapalux, Gold Panda, Shigeto, Bonobo, Clark, Teebs, Flying Lotus etc.

6) How did you go about choosing the over all sound for the production of the EP?

It wasn’t a conscious thing I don’t think. I just know what I like and follow that. I don’t like squeaky clean or crisp productions that much, especially not in electronic music, so I spend a lot of time adding grit and warmth and noisy atmosphere etc.

7) Just a little heads up for those attending Park Acoustics, what can they expect from you? You have any tricks you got stored for them?

They can expect me pushing a lot of buttons and turning knobs, and cool stuff coming out of the speakers

8) What are you thoughts are the Park Acoustics Line Up? Which of the artist would you suggest to party goesrs to come see apart from yourself?

I was really stoked when I saw the line-up because it’s a really amazing cross-genre endeavour. Some great artists from both the electronic and rock worlds. I’ve always been a big Felix Laband fan, so I’m really looking forward to his set. Sibot also always rules. I don’t think anyone’s going to disappoint to be honest, regardless of what you’re into…

9) When you visit our website,, what is your first impression?

That I like the look/design of it?

10) Bounce question: In a one-story pink house, there was a pink person, a pink cat, a pink fish, a pink computer, a pink chair, a pink table, pink walls, a pink telephone and a pink shower. Everything was pink. What colour were the stairs?

A ”one-storey house” wouldn’t have stairs?

11) Anything else you want to say? Any shouts?

Thanks for your time and interest. Also, big thanks to Park Acoustics for booking me. I’m really excited to be a part of this line-up. Other than that, if anyone wants to listen to some of my tunes (including some free downloads etc), please visit my website at or follow me on Sound Cloud:
