I’m Half ‘n Half and I like playing a variety of tunes ranging from indie, rock ‘n roll and funk right through to electro beats that will leave you begging for more.

We’ve got yet another interview from a local DJ playing at Grietfest 2013 in Johannesburg.
In this interview , we talk Hollywood Movies ; What is Half n Half & the Grietfest Lineup.

1.For all the readers out there who may not be familiar with you, tell us a bit about yourself and how Half ‘n Half started.?

” My name is Jean-Michel and I DJ under the name Half ‘n Half. In terms of starting out, I still see myself starting out (hahaha). About 3 years ago my friend asked me to help her DJ at this Youth Day party and thought that it was really fun to play some of my favourite songs and remixes to people, so I just kept at it.

Obviously developing a style and working at my mixing skills took time, but it’s definitely still fun and I enjoy it every time I play a show. Ideally I’d love to take the next step as Half ‘n Half and work on a completely produced set similar to that of Christian Tiger School or Robert de Long. “

2.If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see play the lead role as you?

“I’ve been told that I look like a skinny Johnny Depp or Abed from Community, but I’d dig it if Will Smith or Donald Glover played me. “

3.What keeps you up till late?

“Looking for new music, brainstorming about new music business ventures and working on band bookings and management (my real job)”

4.What are your top 5 tracks at the moment?

Duck Sauce – It’s You
Bondax – Gold (Snakehips Bootleg)
Christian Tiger School – SABC2
Arctic Monkeys – R U Mine?
Daft Punk – Giorgio by Moroder

5.Do you have a dream as a Dj?

” I’d love to play a festival overseas. But at the moment I want to get more people locally involved in the music scene and make sure local artists can live off their passion. “

6.Which DJ would you like to swap places for one day if you could?

” I love Martin Solveig. He seems like the coolest guy and his videos are always funny. “

7.So Grietfest 2013 is nearly here, what are your thoughts on this years lineup?

” The line up is nuts. So many great local acts and some killer internationals. Last year I played just as the hailstorm hit and about 30 of us crammed into this tiny caravan and kept the party going through the storm. It was definitely a highlight. Big stages are fun, but that was a party. Definitely going to be spending a lot of my time watching acts at that stage this year. “

8. Are you a follower of Social media, do you think its massively important now?

” It’s extremely important. I really enjoy Twitter. As an artist you are presenting yourself as a brand and you need to cultivate that brand through interaction and networking. You are dealing with friends and fans on a personal level, which is awesome. “

9. What do you have planned for Griestfest 2013?

” I’m excited to play an earlyish slot this year. Take things a little bit easier and play with the crowd. Play some of the more chilled stuff I haven’t played in a while, but still keeping it fun and funky. “

10.Would you like to say something to your fans that are reading this?

” Support local music, be it bands, DJ, jazz arrangements, classical. I know it sounds super pretentious, but supporting them means a bigger industry, which leads to cooler parties and events. I’ve taken to Texx (from Texx on Fire blog) philosophy of #1gigaweek. If you love music, support and contribute. This is the best way to do that. Also follow me on twitter ( and Facebook (…self promotion yay! “
